"The central theme of Oksana Slobodina's paintings is the exploration of how our life situations are reflected in the world of objects, as well as in monuments of classical antiquity and the Soviet era — things created by human hands but capable of existing independently from them. At times, this evokes an almost inevitable sense of dialogue with the ever-fashionable and sought-after "sur" (as seen, for example, in the painting This Is Not a Bread Basket, whose title references one of René Magritte’s most famous works).

Yet, the leitmotif of Oksana Slobodina’s work remains the memory of bygone times —
a memory that is always concrete and tangible, in the most literal sense of the word.
The objects in her canvases seem to absorb the warmth of the hands that created
or owned them.

These works can be perceived both as an influx of the past, as its discernible echo,
or as a dream — one that may be strange and intriguing, but never alienating
or frightening."
