Exhibition "Current Currents in Academic Art" The second exhibition of the "Out of Time" gallery, founded in St. Petersburg in 2024 (the first was held in Spain in October of this year), presents to the viewers the works of 10 St. Petersburg artists, each of whom has his own theme and characteristic style. As the name suggests, all the authors in one way or another push off in their work from the traditional, classical school, BUT... This is the "but" that the viewer is invited to learn about at the exhibition, dedicated to the analysis of the most interesting and at the same time authoritative trends in the world art market. From high academicism to synthetic realism, from colorful abstraction to marginal motifs, from impressionism to magical and metaphysical realism - all this is presented by authors, most of whom once graduated from one of the most prestigious academies of arts in the world - the I. Repin Academy. If Natalia Delieva is based on the best examples of Soviet painting, Valeria Privalikhina and Olga Shirokova are direct heirs to the classics of French impressionism, Denis Saunin seeks philosophical meanings in the metaphysical and conceptual, and the Shchegolev dynasty - in the simple and everyday, then Alexandra Nedzvetskaya and Mikhail Tishakov represent in their works the apotheosis of the development of neo-academicism (if we talk about form) and symbolism (in content). Olga Petrova is represented by a series of graphics executed in the genre of magical realism, and Elizaveta Pozharskaya is "the most academic of the expressionists." It is no coincidence that the bulk of the works are portraits of contemporaries: it is known that the Academy specializes in this genre, honing the skill of conveying character and resemblance for centuries. But each author shows us his own view of the portrait: from the exquisite, almost decadent profile of the Beautiful Lady to the philosophically meaningful allegorical image of the Little Man. This exhibition is a natural continuation of the "private investigation" that the "Out of Time" gallery devoted to the question of what kind of art is the most popular, authoritative, fashionable and elite in Russia and the world today and why... The art gallery from St. Petersburg offers its own answer to this question. On November 9, 2024, as part of the upcoming exhibition "Current Currents in Academic Art", a discussion was held about the place of classical painting in the modern world, as well as about the controversy between modern and traditional forms. The debate involved invited artists, curators and a museum worker from St. Petersburg on behalf of the "Out of Time" gallery and leading Novgorod artists (P. Bolyukh, A. Oligerov, O. Gulevich), as well as the director of the NCCA "Dialogue" S. Pukhachev on behalf of Veliky Novgorod, respectively. Having studied the exhibition offered to the viewers, everyone will be able to determine for themselves what is closer and more understandable to them. And at the same time, they will learn from the annotations attached to the paintings what particular movement the artist represents and in what region of the world it is considered the most relevant and why." Curator of the "Out of Time" gallery Alexandra Shchegoleva.
